From Fixing to Feeling With Somatics.

When people first discover somatic movement, they usually come seeking a functional fix. They want to untie a knot in their shoulder, release a tight hamstring, or manage chronic lower back pain. And somatic movement absolutely does those things. But if you only look at this practice as a form of physical therapy, you miss its most radical gift. Feeling alive. When you move from fixing to feeling a funny thing happens. Injuries resolve but you also feel more vital and live.

Pain and injury don’t just hurt physically. They often come with tight, hollow sensations in your chest. Or, with a heavy weight in your limbs. Or tiredness or fatigue from meeting challenges.

The emotions and thoughts that come along with these visceral feelings aren’t just bad moods. These experiences are biological events. shift the mood and the physical event at the same time.

Somatic movement helps to fix body parts, in the context remembering how to feel alive.

So, when the weight of living feels overwhelming, our minds try to think our way out of the dark. We analyze, we worry, or we try to force ourselves into a false superficial positivity. But your nervous system doesn’t speak English. It speaks the language of sensation. When faced with chronic stress or collective despair, the body does what it has evolved to do for millennia: it enters a state of functional collapse. It goes numb to protect you from the overload but at the cost of forgetting how to live.

We walk around like ghosts in our own skin—brittle, insulated, and disconnected. We get hyper-focused on fixing and yet we can’t do that without feeling.

Your Body is a Bioregion, Not a Machine. You Need to Feel to Fix.

Traditional fitness and Western medicine often treat the human body like a car. If the exhaust pipes are rattling, you fix the exhaust. If your neck hurts, you stretch the neck.

But your body is not a machine made of isolated parts; it is an interconnected ecosystem. Anf it’s injuries are not disconnected from aliveness.

When you practice conscious somatic movement, you realize that a tight shoulder is rarely just a physical mishap. It is an emotional reaction. It is the physical grip of anxiety, the posture of a body trying to shield its heart from a heavy world. When we slow down and track the internal sensations of that shoulder—unwinding it through gentle, micro-movements rather than forcing it into a stretch—something shifts.

As the physical tissue softens, the mental grip loosens. We aren’t just fixing a joint; we are reclaiming our capacity to breathe fully, to claim space, and to feel safe inside our own skin.

Numbness is a Strategy, Aliveness is a Choice

Despair is a freezing agent. It calcifies us. When the weight of loss or injustice feels too vast to confront, numbness becomes a highly effective survival strategy. It dulls the pain so we can keep going, punch the clock, and get through the day.

The problem is that you cannot selectively numb emotion. When you dull your capacity to feel grief and terror, you also dull your capacity to feel awe, joy, and deep connection. You end up trapped in survival.

We don’t move to “fix” ourselves because we are broken. We move to disrupt the freeze. We move to remind our cells that despite the chaos of the world, we are still here, still breathing, and still biologically awake.

Resilience is Softness, Not Rigid Toughness

We live in a culture that defines resilience as “toughing it out.” We are told to build up walls, grit our teeth, and push through the exhaustion. But in nature, brittle things snap under pressure. An oak tree that cannot bend will break in a strong wind.

True resilience is fluid. It mimics the internal state of our bodies – fluid nature.  It is the capacity to experience the full spectrum of human emotion—including sadness and despair—without being permanently crushed by it.

Somatic movement builds this emotional and mental stamina by expanding our “window of tolerance.” When we learn to stay present with physical or emotional discomfort during a movement practice, we are training our nervous system to handle the emotional turbulence of life.

We develop the stamina to stay soft and responsive in a hard world. We generate the vitality required to face reality head-on and actually make  changes , rather than collapsing into helplessness.
