Meet Your Breathwork Coach: Donna Brooks

Hi, I’m Donna—a somatic movement therapist, yoga expert, and embodied meditation teacher with 40 years’ experience helping people heal through movement.

Twenty years ago, Lyme disease left me too weak to even focus on the breathing techniques I had learned over the years. Fortunately, I discovered a game-changer: that better breath is not a result of a breathing technique-it’s a result of a gentle and unhurried way to establish a normal unconscious breath.

With this, my breath deepened, my energy returned, and I realized we all have this natural power within us. My passion motivated me to go deep into studying and researching breathing techniques and human anatomy, to really understand conflicting ideas and practices. Here, I discovered a breathwork practice anyone can benefit from.

Since then, I have shared this unique breathwork exploration successfully with hundreds of clients, and I’m here to share it with you—using somatic wisdom and practical movements so you can move beyond healing and thrive. Ultimately, this is a path into more aliveness.

What does a breath coach do?

As a breath coach, I help you reconnect with your natural breath by releasing the stress, tension, and patterns that get in the way. These blockages often come from things like past trauma, physical injuries, illness, grief, or even developmental stages you might have skipped as a baby.

Through embodiment practices, we work together to gently unwind these holding patterns—bringing you more clarity, ease, and a deeper sense of well-being.

Does breathwork actually work?

Yes, it absolutely can. Breathwork helps regulate your nervous system, reduce stress, and unlock patterns in your body and mind that may be keeping you stuck. Everyone’s experience is unique, but many people feel more grounded, present, and free after sessions.

What can I expect in a breath coaching session?

Each session is a little different, depending on your needs. We usually begin with a check-in, followed by guided breath exploration, gentle movement, and body awareness techniques. You’ll leave feeling more connected to yourself, and with tools to support you in daily life.

How long does breath training take?

It really depends on your goals and where you’re starting from. Some people feel big shifts after just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support. We’ll tailor it to your pace—there’s no pressure.

What is experiential anatomy?

Experiential anatomy is all about understanding your body from the inside out—through sensation and movement rather than just theory.

By tuning into how your body actually feels and functions, especially in relation to your breath, you gain real tools for self-awareness and long-term well-being.

We might work with:

  • Breathing through the nasal turbinates and alveoli
  • Finding the breath movement in the tailbone and xiphoid process
  • Cellular breathing
  • Core muscle activity (eccentric and concentric)
  • Breathing the lesser-known diaphragms
  • Heart-initiated breathing
  • Experiencing the natural pauses in inhalation and exhalation.

These techniques can open up surprising and powerful shifts in your breath and body.

Is coaching part of the breath coaching process?

Definitely. Emotional and mental patterns often go hand-in-hand with how we breathe. As your breath becomes more open, it creates space to process emotions and shift mindset patterns too. I’m here to support you with insight, compassion, and guidance for lasting change.

How is this different from somatic therapy?

Breath coaching shares some elements with somatic therapy—we both work with awareness of body sensations, emotions, and the nervous system.

What makes this work unique is the focus on movement education alongside breathwork. You'll learn how your body and breath are connected, and how to support yourself if old patterns come back.
